How to Make Brown Butter

Step #1 Add butter to a saucepan over medium heat; whisk frequently

The method of making brown butter is straightforward. Begin by melting unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk frequently until it foams and settles. becomes light golden brown in color and emits an aroma like toasted nuts.

Step #2 Cook until it becomes light golden brown or caramel in color and emits an aroma like toasted nuts. You’ll see specks of brown in the pan. This is normal and the process should take 8-10 minutes

Step #3 Add to sealable container and let it chill in the refrigerator overnight before using.

Brown butter can be used within a few minutes. However, the process is more effective when it’s allowed to chill overnight for maximum flavor and texture.

Step #4 Remove the amount of butter you need from the fridge 2 hours before using, so it can turn to room temperature.

How long can you store brown butter?

As long as the brown butter is stored in a sealable container and kept refrigerated, it can keep up to one month. Browned butter will remain solid in the fridge, but will soften at room temperature.

  • Add butter to a saucepan over medium heat.

  • Cook until butter turns a light gold / caramel color; you’ll see specs of brown in the pan. This is normal and the process should take 8-10 minutes.

  1. I make brown butter all the time at home…its sooooo yummy! I mostly use it over steamed broccoli and then add some mizithra cheese to the top. Makes a wonderful side dish for any meal!!
